The Songs : Family Tree

*Finished 12/99*
Music (10-11/99) Words (11-12/99)

Blood is thicker than water
but you can dilute it if you try
I know the outcome
when all things related pass me by

And nothing seems to change
but that's alright

Caught up in the shadow
I have stepped into that light
but out in the open
some just don't look the same as I

And everything is strange
but that's alright

You believe
in everything but me (2x)

If you have seen my tree
could you tell me something
why is it no matter what I do
my roots are crumbling

And if you see my tree
can you tell me this please
how could it be that I have lost
my branches and leaves

Slowly taken for granted
but it's getting harder to decide
how to approach it
without having to find a place to hide

And I feel rearranged
but that's alright

You deceive
everyone but me (2x)

If you have seen my tree
could you tell me something
why is it no matter what I do
my roots are crumbling

And if you see my tree
can you tell me this please
how could it be that I have lost
my branches and leaves

With nothing left to show
and no more room to grow
leaving more than you'll ever know

The leaves are torn...
the roots have dried...
the branches are broken...
my tree has died

Background:
Lyrics: duh. (but damn, there's a lot of 'em, huh?)
Music: This is one of the few where I had a specific vocal arrangement in mind (first four lyrical bars written before any music) and then thought up something musically that would fit that. Or at least I tried. I did that for the verse and the semi-chorus, both... and then some other stuff just kinda fit in there. Music was again finished before all of the lyrics. A couple of the parts were random riffs from October jam sessions. And it's very cool. I kinda dig it. It's long as hell, too... around 4:30+.
