The Songs : Seeing The Green

*Finished* 6/02
Music (?/00, 12/01-1/02, 5-6/02) Words (10/30/01-11/01, 5-6/02)

Arms crossed in vain
eyes closed in shame
hands chilled from cold rain
this could be the end of me, but I...
I can't feel the pain

Still today
the forests burn away

Do you believe in the green of the trees
the life that pours through the veins in the leaves
giving right back all the air you breathe
I think I'm beginning to see the green

Leaves fall to brown
skies burn to ground
ears hear with no sound
I can't tell if I'm in hell, but I...
I'll just turn around

As I go
my conscience hides below

Do you believe in the green of the trees
the life that pours through the veins in the leaves
giving right back all the air you breathe
I think I'm beginning to see the green

I can see all the green in the trees
and I find shade in the shelter of the leaves
giving me a chance to cure my disease
everybody needs to see the green
everybody needs to see the green

Everybody needs
to see
the green

Background:
Lyrics: I started this song on the porch of an old farmhouse in the middle of an animal reserve of rainforest near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I was looking out into the forest, and all I could see was green. Sort of my pro-environment song. All I wrote on that day (10/31/01) was the chorus. Finally began on the verses about 7 months after the fact. The vocal arrangement took me awhile... then the words weren't too far behind.
Music: I've decided to open this song with an old riff that I really like. I have no idea when it was conceived, though - either late last year or very early this year (hence the ?/00). all I know is it was before the fire. I have also sorta started with some music to go along with the written choruses... I found a kickass groove jam that is the bridge from the intro into the verse, and then that bridges out with a short and similar thing. Ends up around 3:40.
