The Songs : Most Of Your Friends

*Finished* 11/06
Music (8/05, 11/05, 1/06, 11/06) Words (11/05, 1/06)

Iíve tried to find a reason to forgive
but itís hard to lie when I know what they did
you dropped the past so fast, too quickly for my taste
but it's built to last, so you can't replace

When you begin to sin with someone elseís rules
and they break within, they look like fools
I canít believe the things that people will do
and still they claim to be a friend to you

I wish I could tell
where the line begins and ends
but I wonít pretend
I donít easily bend
I canít get down with most of your friends

Most of your friends
think that theyíre protecting you
but a push is still a shove
the only thing theyíre keeping you from is love

You never know how low the silence can be
until you try to show that you can be free
their lack of faith erased my feeling of resolve
as I start to face my need to evolve
I need to evolve from this
but I can't assume your risk
it's your right, it's your life
still it's something I don't have to like
I understand the power of your fear
but I can't forget who created your tears

And I wish I could tell
where the line begins and ends
but I wonít pretend
I donít easily mend
I canít get down with most of your friends

Most of your friends
think that theyíre protecting you
but a push is still a shove
the only thing theyíre keeping you from is love

Most of your friends
think that theyíre respecting you
but who are they above?
the only thing theyíre keeping you from is love

I canít get down with most of your friends
No, I canít get down with most of your friends
I believe they'll get what they deserve in the end

Background:
Music: Intro/verse riff just sorta appeared one day at Steph's house and a vocal melody was constructed (very much later) afterwards. Then most of the first verse lyrics, and then the rest of the music was mostly in reply to new lyrics. I had the intro/verse riff and then the chorus/pre-chorus, which were very disjointed - and it took some time to come up with the bridges. And then it became apparent that the verse riff had to be different than the intro because I couldn't get the lyrics to sound right over that progression. I tried a couple different things around that time (1/06) but nothing seemed to work and kinda just left the demo 90% done with some changes missing. It sat around unfinished for the rest of the year until November, when I finished another song I was working on and remembered that this wasn't yet done. I revisited it and came up with a reasonable alternative, added the bridge music and worked out the kinks. Not bad.
Lyrics: Got the idea for a song about Steph's non-supportive pals at the zoo one day, quite randomly. Most of them don't like me. I was looking for a song I could include on her record but that gave me some room to be a little angry. Just needed a little edge in there will all the love. I already had the verse riff music, it just needed a theme. I had to split the first verse up into 2 separate verses when I re-did the verse progression. It was just way too long.
