The Songs : A Long Way

*Finished* 9/17
Music (12/02, 9-10/05) & Words (7-9/17)

Take what you want
if you can't find
what you need
baby, it's fine with me
I got time to kill
if it don't kill me

I'll be here
waiting patiently

I know why
you have been blind
in both eyes
I could see signs
that clearly show
I'm all right
just barely though

But take a chance on me
we could both see light

Staying the course is the hardest part
'cause it's a long way
it's a long way
if I have time, maybe I'll find
the road to your heart
but it's a long way
it's a long way
it's a long way

Breathe slowly
waiting can be
lonely
this is on me
if only now
but I won't bow out
honey, you know me

I'm still here
waiting impatiently

Staying the course is the hardest part
'cause it's a long way
it's a long way
if I have time, maybe I'll find
the road to your heart
I can try
but it's a long way
it's a long way
it's a long way

If I come to grips
with the words upon your lips
to keep myself in play
and survive one more day
but it's a long damn way

Staying the course is the hardest part
'cause it's a long way
it's a long way
if I have time, maybe I'll find
the road to your heart
I'm gonna try
but it's a long way
to find your fate
it's a long way
worth the wait

Background:
Lyrics: 12 damn years after I wrote the thing, I hated the original words. They weren't very good to begin with. I had tweaked the music a little (see below) to get it to where I really liked it, but then had to completely re-do the lyrics (and melody) to suit the new version. It finally hit me while I was walking the dog one morning and then it took off from there and they were finished shortly. Trying to keep with the theme of the rest of the songs on this record.
Music: Originally started on the Jersey Shore while everyone else was sleeping (first two verses of the lyrics, too) in September '05. Changed a bit in the final version. Kind of bland except for the chorus riff. The intro was on its own until married to this song and written much earlier, in late 2002. When recording in 2016/17, the tempo was increased and the verse progression rhythm changed. and electrified.
